SCI-Arc just sent out a press release announcing the school's receipt of a $1 million donation from Robert Day, founder and Chairman of TCW.

Committed to making Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) one of the foremost architecture schools in the U.S., Robert Day has gifted SCI-Arc with $1 Million, the largest gift in the school's 35-year history. Made through the Robert A. Day Foundation, the generous contribution is dedicated to state-of-the-art technology and facilities that further SCI-Arc's mission: to educate architects to engage, speculate, and innovate.

This gift supports the fundamental methodology at SCI-Arc, which teaches innovation through experience, as well as a re-investment into Downtown L.A. Approximately $200,000 will be used specifically on progressive technology that is paramount to SCI-Arc's mission. This includes state-of-the-art software, new hardware, 3-D printers, and CNC milling equipment. The remaining portion will be committed to SCI-Arc's facilities as well as new technologies to continue SCI-Arc's reputation as one of the most innovative architecture schools in the U.S. (Design and Engineering Magazine, 2006).

SCI-Arc is a great Downtown institution and a very worthy recipient for such a gift.

I will add that Robert is a fellow Claremont McKenna alum (and board member) and has made similar generous contributions to our school as well.
