South Group Gets Good Ink in the Times
DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — The Times' Roger Vincent has a good profile of the South Group in today's business section. South Group broke some important new ground with its cluster of projects, and the article notes that the variances it gained are now largely the template for guidelines put out by the Planning Department's Urban Design Studio.
Particularly dear to my heart is their work to get out from street widening requirements, and instead put the money into pedestrian improvements.

Senor e, look at their map... 12th St. has moved 600 feet and it didn't register at Cal Tech.
Wait till The Palm finds out it's got a new address.

# on Nov.13.2007 AT 09:47 AMI live in Elleven and I have questioned the LEED rating of Gold for the building. The hallways are kept at a brisk 72 degrees, 10 bike racks for 176 units, stairwells are locked so we are forced to use the elevator even in our own parking garage, no gray water system, diesel fuel generators, no solar or wind energy.
I can tell you stories of the early days when we moved in that would make an environmentalist cry. As with all new buildings we had some problems. One of them was a hot water issue. We didn’t have any for a few days. Well the problem was resolved and each resident was told to turn on their water faucet and let it run until the hot water came through to purge the system. I can’t count how many gallons went down my drain.
Yes it is true the developer has done a good job but we are patting ourselves on the back and awarding ourselves with false certificates. Yes our windows open, shouldn’t they? We have trees and bushes on the sidewalk, but shouldn’t we? I think our city has taken better steps to allow better construction but we have a long way to go before we truly become better residents in an urban environment.
