One Street Opens, A Bridge Gets Set to Close

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — After months of being cut off by construction for the Metro Gold Line Eastside Extension Light Rail project, Vignes street’s crossing at the base of the 1st street bridge was reopened Monday afternoon. Traffic on 1st continues with one lane in each direction until January 28th, when the bridge will be closed for a month of construction. The closure was originally scheduled for Sunday, but was pushed a week according to Ahmmad Eldeib, a Metro Gold Line Excavation Field Engineer.

In contrast to other Downtown construction, in which the sidewalk is usually the first victim, bridge access for pedestrians will be maintained throughout the project.

1st street between Alameda and Vignes will be open for business and resident access, and those traveling between Downtown’s Arts District/Little Tokyo and Boyle Heights will be detoured to Cesar Chavez Ave.

Any potential impact on Santa Fe which goes under the bridge? I'll find out soon enough as I take this route every morning and evening to and from daycare.

I wouldn't imagine so. Santa Fe has been open throughout construction thus far, and is certainly important enough that an impact to it would merit mention on the 1st street closure notices.

Actually, I've noted a couple of times where Santa Fe has been closed(!) over the past few months. It was no big deal. So I just wondered if this work would cause a more significant impact. We'll see. As I said, I'll find out whenever they do, because of my daily commute.
