Second Street Activation Eric Richardson

Wednesday we wrote about the proposed widening on Second Street. The shot above is a rendering of a idea for activating that stretch of sidewalk, done in 2006 for Gilmore & Associates.

Monday at 6:30pm the community is invited to a special meeting of the DLANC Transportation & Public Works committee, where the main topic will be a presentation on the proposed widening of Second street, and a discussion of how we should be prioritizing the use of our public right of way. We'll also be pitching several other cool opportunities that are coming up quick and trying to get you involved.

As an added bonus, the meeting is being held at Vibiana, so it's a great chance to come inside the old Cathedral and take a look around.

This is a fun chance to take a look at a very concrete project while having a discussion on the big picture topics of how we make Downtown a great urban environment. Who knows, we may just head down the street after for an officially unofficial blogdowntown afterparty as well.

The funny thing about that stretch of sidewalk is the ventilation exhaust from Caltrans blasting from the building all along there. Warm damp air, not that inviting, unfortunately.

Tim, I walked my dog down this stretch for a couple years and you're right, there are vents. But that sidewalk is enormous, leaving plenty of room for comfortable cafe style seating with some food and drink vendors. Plenty.

It still speaks of the poor design aspect of both the 2nd and San Pedro sides of an otherwise amazing building...making these flaws all the more frustrating...
