The June Downtown Art Walk rolls around on Thursday, June 11, and the event has a new website up and running. Front and center is a map that gives you locations of the various galleries. New director Richard Schave says more features will be up soon.

Around the May Art Walk

The Continential Ed Fuentes

|Photo Gallery| Two minutes before the official end of May's Downtown Art Walk, event founder Bert Green stood on 4th street with artist Richard Ankrom and LAPD Sergeant Kris Werner watching the crowd.

For Green, it was the end of his shift.

"This is my last Art Walk tonight. I'm very proud of it" says Green, who will continue to be involved but now hands over the reins to a new leadership team. "At the first Art Walk, we had 75 very terrified people over 20 blocks all day, all saying 'You're crazy, this is never going to happen.'" — Continued Inside...

The May Downtown Art Walk is upon us, and the monthly Thursday night self-guided tour of art and exhibitions carries on from noon to 9pm (with some shenanigans going later into the night).

There is something for everyone. The Downtown Art Walk can offer an evening in Old Bank District art venues, a full day off the Gallery Row path that has you also exploring Downtown's major museums, or just some time in a cafe to people watch. — Continued Inside...

The Downtown Art Walk for April 2009 is here and a host of businesses are still joining in.

So are the craft vendors that crowd the sidewalks. An odd note: at last month's Art Walk a sidewalk vendor told me it was the crafts that made Art Walk popular.

Uh... no it isn't. — Continued Inside...

Around the March Art Walk

Raw Materials Ed Fuentes

|Photo Gallery| March's Downtown Art Walk exposed some growing pains. The large crowds visiting Downtown are a great success story, but with them come some challenges. Art and architecture supply store Raw Materials learned that lesson the hard way last night as an individual caught shoplifting escaped by smashing a large front window.

The party atmosphere that surrounds Art Walk's later hours is proving a challenge for store and gallery owners, particularly around Main street between 4th and 5th. — Continued Inside...

Art Walk Preview for March, 2009

Pharmaka Ed Fuentes

With the time change, the March 2009 Downtown Art Walk will have a 6:59 pm sunset, just about the time the artists receptions begin -- assuming they all remembered to change their clocks. The forecast for 5th and Main is partly cloudy, with a high of 63 degrees before dipping to 56 degrees at sunset.

Pharmaka is a stop for "TRANSformal," the Los Angeles rendition of a traveling showcase featuring nine international abstract painters. The show is designed to "question the cultural and aesthetic differences" in contemporary abstraction. It first opened as "TRANS:Abstraktion" in November, 2007. By November 2009 TRANS will be at San Francisco's Meridian Gallery. — Continued Inside...

Schave will become the event's Executive Director, while Green will stay involved in the event's publicity.

Since its beginning in September of 2004, Downtown Art Walk has become one of Downtown's best-known cultural events, bringing several thousand people to the streets of Gallery Row on the second Thursday of each month. — Continued Inside...

Varvara Shavrova Ed Fuentes

|Photo Gallery| It's February, and if you [heart] Downtown, you love Art Walk. This month's edition comes on Thursday, February 12. The Los Angeles Times offered up a lengthy story and a photo essay including some face time for Ricky the Pirate.

Down and out denizen you say? Not at all. On Art Walk night Ricky's a performance artist who speaks of the masked figure venturing the urban abyss on a plank of Main Street solitude. — Continued Inside...
