Portland Streetcar Trip

The L.A. Times has a short piece on the Downtown streetcar effort running this morning on its L.A. Now blog. In a twist, though, it calls the proposed car a "street trolley." I understand streetcar. I understand trolley. But "street trolley?"

Streetcar Open House

It's amazing how the streetcar project has grown up. Just under four years ago, a few dozen Downtown stakeholders were gathered in the boardroom of the Central City Association, using pipe cleaners to lay out imagined routes on a big map. Last night, for the open house hosted by Los Angeles Streetcar, Inc., the materials were a little more professional.

Metro Board Appointments Eric Richardson

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa today appointed Councilman Jose Huizar to Metro's Board of Directors, giving Huizar a powerful platform to push for transportation improvements on Broadway and advocate for the Downtown streetcar.

"I think it's a tremendous boost for the streetcar," Huizar said this morning when asked how the appointment would affect his favorite project. "It helps to think about how the streetcar relates to other transportation systems in the Downtown area, particularly the Connector." — Continued Inside...

Meet the New Face of LA Streetcar, Inc

Dennis Allen

Last Friday, Dennis Allen was appointed Project Manager for LA Streetcar, Inc., the newly-created non-profit charged with spearheading development of a streetcar for Downtown. On Thursday we sat down with Allen to get his perspective on the project, which backers hope to see in service by 2014.

Allen is still getting up to speed on the history of the streetcar initiative, but he was enthusiastic and eager to take on the challenges of what looks to be at least a five-year project that will end with a streetcar running up (or down) the newly renovated Broadway, looping through downtown to connect Bunker Hill and LA Live.

The next six months should bring determination of the streetcar's route. "It's important to identify that early on," Allen said, in order to move forward with other components of the project. — Continued Inside...

Catching Up With... The Downtown Streetcar

Portland Streetcar Trip Eric Richardson

As we go through the last few days of 2008, we thought it useful to take a look at some of the important Downtown projects working their way through the system.

The Project: Though an old idea, 2008 was a year of sudden activity for the project to bring a streetcar back to Downtown Los Angeles. With the announcement of the Bringing Back Broadway project in January, the project got a political wave to ride, and successfully navigated its way to the creation of a non-profit, the earmark of $5 million in redevelopment funds and successful public forums. Though a final route has not been decided, the basic plan would have ends at the Convention Center and Music Center, with a north-south leg on Broadway.

Latest Status: The non-profit Los Angeles Streetcar, Inc., is officially up and running via the Community Partners incubator program (blogdowntown's parent, verbdowntown, is set up through the same program). The project is preparing to name an Executive Director for the organization, who would manage the engineering and outreach work necessary to more forward. — Continued Inside...

The City of Los Angeles got the construction of Upper 2nd Street done significantly under budget, and Councilman Jose Huizar wants to see the $1 million leftover put into the Downtown Streetcar project. The new funds come hot on the heels of $5 million approved by the Community Redevelopment Agency last week.

CRA staff also presented the board with a potential budget and proposed funding sources for the project, which is estimated to cost $90 million and could be up and running in 2014. — Continued Inside...
