Boston Globe Runs the APT Story
By Eric Richardson — May 13, 2007 — 6 Comments
Part of the fun of something like the recent Times piece on Downtown APTs is watching to see how that story spreads. Earlier in the week I noted that Newsweek grabbed my quote for its perspectives page.
Today the Boston Globe runs the story in its pages. Since it's just a straight run of the Times piece there's no mention that Boston's had similar toilets for several years now.
According to my count we're now at roughly 201 days since the Pershing Square APT got set in concrete.
Update (Monday): Today the story runs in the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette.
Also, a great quote from an article on the lack of public toilets for patrons of Chicago's rail system:
"To be able to relieve one's bladder is one of the most basic and perpetual functions from the beginning of our lives to the end, and it should neither be treated as a luxury or as a favor," said [commuter Gina] Gibson, who works in the admissions department at the University of Chicago Hospitals.
City Pursues Arts District Park Space
By Eric Richardson — May 13, 2007 — 11 Comments
Way back in November of 2005 I noted a motion directing the City's General Services Department to look for possible park sites in the Arts District. After first saying in February of 2006 that it couldn't find anything, GSD turned in a June report indicating possible sites for a pocket park.
Just this month Jan Perry made a motion (PDF) that the City make an offer to purchase 735 E. 3rd street, the triangular plot where Traction, 3rd and Rose come together. Formerly a gas station, there aren't too many uses that could be squeezed into the site's 4,000 square feet. It would seem that a small park would be a great outcome for an odd parcel like this one. Given a little grass and a tree or two, this would make a great western edge to the scene on Traction.

ah food
By Eric Richardson — May 13, 2004
On the way back from lunch today I wasn't paying attention and walked straight past the front door to my building. Yeah, I'm still new here.
I was feeling boring and hungry, so I just wandered over to the Subway on Hill/Fifth to get something to eat. This also sent me straight past the BofA ATMs on Hill between 5th and 6th, which was convenient. Across the street there is Pershing Square, a park that now sits on top of a parking garage and sometimes doubles as a concert venue. And around Christmas time it's the site of LA's downtown ice rink, something I didn't make it to this past holiday season but definitely plan to next year.
