4 Cheap Hotels in Kansas City for Concert Weekends
United States — Four hand-picked budget hotels in Kansas City, matched to your show nights, with honest airport tips from a former ground-crew supervisor.
I usually fall for small, characterful stays, the kind with a story behind the front door. When the ticket money goes on the show, though, I pick plain, well-placed beds instead. These are the four budget hotels I'd send a friend to in Kansas City, each matched to the nights out it suits best.
Show nights decide the bed
I spent years on the apron watching passengers land with a ticket in one hand and no plan for the night after. Kansas City is a show town in the colder months, with arena tours, theatre runs, casino stages and a Chiefs home game. When ticket money is the big spend, I stop hunting for charm and choose a clean, dull, sensible bed. Below I match four budget stays to the nights out, and you can compare further among all accommodations in Kansas City. A transfer time can shift, so always confirm the current run before you rely on it.
Downtown arena and theatre nights
The big rooms cluster downtown. In early November the Jonas Brothers play the T-Mobile Center, Three Days Grace follows a few days later, and Trans-Siberian Orchestra gives an afternoon show in the last week of December. The Midland Theatre on Main Street hosts Goose, then Kenny G in mid-November and Blue October in early December. The Truman has The Damned. My pick for a one-splurge trip is a seat for Kenny G at the Midland.
A kitchenette base near the water parks
The Chiefs host the Jets at Arrowhead on a Sunday at noon in early November. I'd plan that day backwards from parking, which must be bought in advance, with non-reserved Red Lot spaces sold through Ticketmaster. The VIP tailgate tent opens four hours before kickoff, but its passes cover neither parking nor entry, so budget for both. A late-December game against the 49ers brings a Champions Tailgate inside the stadium gates. If game day and park days share one trip, a self-catering base saves money.
Plain, practical and quietly generous with space, it gives every air-conditioned room a kitchenette, stovetop, microwave and dining table, so breakfast never needs a restaurant bill. It sits 1.8 km from Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun, with Liberty Hall 8 km away and Union Station 15 km, and I'd pick it for a trip mixing park days with downtown shows, though KCI is 29 km out. Free private parking settles it, and it is exactly where to stay in Kansas City when you're driving to Arrowhead.
Zona Rosa comedy night
Zona Rosa is the shopping and entertainment district that hosts Bill Bellamy at the Funny Bone Comedy Club on November 20, with a seven o'clock start. It's the one big night out on my list that suits a short, late-landing stay near the airport. I once watched a whole flight of comedy fans race for the taxi rank, and the ones who had booked a bed nearby were laughing hardest.
Plain, sensible and happiest as a short stop, it offers an indoor pool for the morning after a late show, free WiFi and a work desk in each room. The airport is a five-minute drive and Zona Rosa a ten-minute one, while the shuttle carries a $5.00 toll fee per trip, so confirm the current run before you count on it (Booking.com).
Casino-stage nights at Ameristar and Harrah's
Ameristar's Star Pavilion is the budget-friendly stage on this list. Covered parking is always free, and doors mostly open at half past seven. 38 Special plays in early November, John Waite and the Ozark Mountain Daredevils follow in mid-November, and Aaron Lewis and a Christmas show with Shooting Star & Missouri arrive in early December. Entry is 18 and up unless with an adult. At VooDoo at Harrah's, Alter Bridge plays in mid-November and the New Year's Eve dance bash is for guests 21 and over, with free parking in front and in a covered garage. Free parking is the best line in any listing, to my mind.
Uptown Theater nights
Uptown Theater on Broadway is my budget-night favourite, with plenty of free street parking plus a lot on the north side. Daughtry plays an unplugged anniversary show in early November, Cheap Trick follows with doors at six, and Brandi Carlile arrives late in the month for a reserved-seat night. If I could pick one, it would be Cheap Trick. The box office takes cash only, so carry some. Encore at Uptown Theater shares the address, and the Madrid Theatre on Main Street hosts acts such as Plini and Katy Nichole.
My favourite landing pad for a late arrival, with a free airport shuttle, an indoor pool and Burger Theory and Lounge on site for dinner when the last thing you want is to hunt for a restaurant. It sits 3 km from the airport with the KCI Expo Center next door, and the heart of Kansas City is about twenty minutes' drive, so confirm the current time before a doors-open dash. More details ->
Holiday stages from late November
From late November the calendar softens into holiday theatre. A Christmas Carol plays at Kansas City Repertory Theatre, Kansas City Ballet dances The Nutcracker at the Muriel Kauffman Theatre, and Phantom of the Opera tours into Music Hall Kansas City in early December. The only parking there is paid, across the street. The Hip Hop Nutcracker takes the Midland stage in mid-December, and Home Free brings holiday harmonies to Uptown the same evening. For these nights, I'd keep a car and a kitchen.
Family rooms with a kitchenette, sofa bed and picnic area make this feel like a small flat rather than a hotel, which I find rather charming! It is 3 km from the airport, with Lake Waukomis 8 km away and Union Station 25 km, and guests praise the kitchen and the value for money. Reviews and photos are on Tripadvisor ↗
The apron question: do I need a car?
The question travellers always asked me on the apron was whether they needed a car. For the airport hotels, not on arrival night. Holiday Inn has a free shuttle and the Days Inn shuttle costs $5.00 per trip, while for the two Extended Stay options I'd plan on a taxi or hired car. At Kansas City International, go to the airport information desk or the official taxi rank and ask three things: which pickup point serves your hotel, whether the run is free or paid, and when the next one leaves. Downtown is around twenty minutes from the airport hotels, but confirm the current run and traffic first.
Which one fits your trip
If park days and a Chiefs game share your trip, I'd take the kitchenette base. For a Zona Rosa comedy night, the Days Inn is the short hop. A late landing with a free shuttle points to the Holiday Inn, and a family with a matinee or two will like the Tiffany Springs rooms. If your plans wander beyond the city, you can also browse hotels in Missouri. Prices and availability can change, so confirm when booking, then pick the one that fits your Kansas City trip.
