Outgoing LAPD Chief William Bratton presided over his first and only COMPSTAT meeting inside the new Police Administration Building on Tuesday afternoon, praising the data and analysis effort for the impact it has made on the department's operations.

The system, which Bratton brought with him from New York City, uses computer mapping to drive crime trends and drive the deployment of officers.

Bratton credited the work of those involved with the system in helping lower crime. He said that the department's COMPSTAT work had become a model in use around the world. "I know of nothing else that has brought us so much attention nationally and internationally," said Bratton.

Each CompStat meeting focuses on one of LAPD's four bureaus. At Tuesday's meeting, Chief Detective Charlie Beck led questioning of captains from the bureau.

Between Beck and Bratton was Detective Jeff Godown, who has led the COMPSTAT department. Godown is leaving LAPD to move to the San Francisco Police Department, and Bratton thanked him for the way he and his team had refined and advanced the program.

The new Police Administration Building across from City Hall contains a room designed for the COMPSTAT meetings, which previously had been held in temporary quarters at the L.A. Mart. The room features three large projection screens up front, with a duplicate set midway back for those in the audience. COMPSTAT meetings are open to the public, and Bratton said that transparency was critical to the department's success.

The Police Administration Building will be officially opened this Saturday, October 24, with a grand opening celebration at 10am.
