Four New Eateries Open Downtown: Magnolia, Mother Road, Crown Cafe and Infusion Cafe

By Eric Richardson
Published: Thursday, March 19, 2009, at 11:38AM

Expect better reports to come in later, but it's been a busy week for Downtown dining. Four new eateries have just opened their doors: Magnolia (Financial District), Mother Road (South Park), Crown Cafe (Historic Core) and Infusion Cafe (Fashion District).

Magnolia Downtown is a second location for the Hollywood-based establishment. Located at 825 W. 9th St., the restaurant opens in space formerly occupied by Zita. From the restaurant's press release:

Ron Marino and Laurie Mulstay open Magnolia in Downtown Los Angeles located at 825 W. 9th St. Magnolia Downtown is the fourth business for the LA-based entrepreneurial pair, who also own Magnolia and The BAR in Hollywood and CHLOE in Santa Monica.

With their great vibe, classic American menu, unpretentious style and staff, and mid-range prices, Magnolia presents a refreshing concept to the Downtown area. Magnolia will cater to the growing number of Downtown residents as well as the many business professionals in the financial and fashion districts, and will serve as an ideal lunch spot, a great place to grab drinks after work, or dinner following a Lakers game. Magnolia Downtown is conveniently located near the Staples and Convention Centers, Disney Concert Hall and LA Opera.

Executive Chef Richard Crespin, formerly of Gordon Ramsay and Jean Georges, will continue to oversee the menu for both Magnolia locations.

Via an email from Mother Road, at 836 S. Grand:

Please join us at Mother Road for lunch as a new addition to the community. We want to meet you and hear your thoughts as to how we can best provide excellent food and service to our new downtown LA neighbors. Located just across from 801 South Grand at the Hotel Stillwell (836 S. Grand), our concept is "Modern Americana", which is classic American faire such as 8oz and 12oz hamburgers, steaks, and grilled sandwiches. We call it modern bercause we have updated Americana to include dishes that have become American classics regardless of their origin such as tacos rancheras, fish tacos, a hummus trio. We've even added a dash of soul with our crispy pork spareribs, macaroni and cheese, and special wings.

And from Crown Cafe owner Robert Kashefi, whose eatery is at 531 S. Los Angeles:

I am a new cafe/coffee shop owner in Downtown. I am having a grand opening this Thursday March 19 at Crown Cafe a new cafe on Los Angeles St. between 5th and 6th St. I am located in the old Historic Toy Building. Crown Cafe is a place were people can enjoy specialty coffee, delicious pastries, and great panini sandwiches. It is decorated with painting pieces of local artists and picures of different location of Downtown, we also play buddah bar music to make sure the vibe of the cafe is set accordingly. We have two areas, for fast & go, and also areas where you can sit on a comfortable couch and have a drink and work. We offer complimentary WIFI, and have space for events, shows and private parties.

And finally, Infusion Cafe at 808 S. Spring has been open for a few weeks but has its official grand opening and ribbon cutting this evening. Councilwoman Jan Perry is slated to be on hand for a 6pm ribbon cutting.

Don't forget about Yxta at 6th & Central, they opened about 2 weeks ago. Pretty awesome Mexican food and a good happy hour menu.

Transfusion would be a smart move for them.

Coffee was looked and tasted like dirty tea. Food was mediocre. And I don't recall asking the counter girl if she was lactose intolerant as I was ordering a sandwich although she found it necessary to tell me so.

Walked by the Mother Road the other day...it looks terrific! Great ambience and I hope that it does better than Tranquility Base. Shame that it closed already. it was great place for Sunday brunches!

I don't know about others, but our party ate at the Infusion Cafe last week and found the food affordable, fresh, delicious, and abundant. We all had to take home leftovers. The leftovers made a meal in itself because the portions are HUGE. Coffee was in a big cup with their logo. Hot and good.

had a GREAT time on the 2nd day of opening @ Magnolia... unfortunately, was basically asked to leave Mother Road last nite due to not "introducing" myself as a blogger/yelper/whatever before taking pix:

don't forget to email Mr. jaunenito to thank him for doing such a GREAT job as the restaurant manager:

Sino, I only answer your comment on MotherRoad here because most of the places you re-posted your hit piece don't allow people to respond/comment to your post. What's your REAL issue with this place. One minute you say that you are the only patron in the place, the next you find it important to point out that all of the other patrons were black. Which is it? Or are the other patrons non-patrons? Even in a hit job, what self respecting blogger/yelper/whateveryouwannacallit describes finishing up a broccoli soup without telling readers how it tasted, snaps off pictures without providing descriptions? You see, I was one of the black patrons in the restaurant and you were not chatting with the hostess but scowled and in VERY disrupting fashion began to snap off shot after shot in a small dining room. That got the manager's (and the rest of us!) attention so he walked over and merely asked if you were a writer, blogger, or reporter. YOU LIED and told him you were just a guy waiting on a meal "lil ol me". He then said that it would have been better if you had simply identified yourself and could have taken all the pictures you wanted. Then you walked out. The issue here is not you or your camera. After reading everywhere you posted this hit job on the place (and I told the manager you would) its clear your camera is your weapon. The blogosphere gives you a medium which to scowl through the city, snap off pictures, and blast places where other people intend to find happiness. You blast celebrities, bash new ventures, bash happiness, bash smiles, and have internalized a sense of cool that you hope to get agreement on without putting yourself out there. You have your OWN blog and won't put YOUR picture up, yet you walk around disrupting dining rooms, levying assault on new ventures, using name that you think sounds cool, when the truth is you're hiding behind that name. At my table someone had the Royale burger and we were having a conversation earlier that day about what you would want to take with you if you were going to be stranded on a desert island. She recalled that conversation and said, "Remember when you asked whats the one thing I would have to take with me?". Stunning our entire table she pointed to her Royale burger and said "This". Now, maybe you got into a childish banter with the manager, but if you've committed to reviewing then review. If you have beef with the LA Times or uh...journalism school...then prove why understanding things like making yourself the story and inadvertantly appealing to prejudice are not important. Prove that the journalistic error of telling us you ate something and not tasting it or taking pix and not describing the place was an oversight. Since you posted this hit job all over the internet, I am sure you will accept this challenge. Since you have dissed EVERY burger place that has opened this month, go back to Mother Road, order the Royale Burger, and tell me if my friend was right. If she wasn't I'll introduce myself to you personally (publicly)on this blog and pay you for the burger, for at least taking the challenge. You don't need to be a reporter and you don't have to prove to me that you are a qualified reviewer. Just prove you at least got some soul since you're using it in your name bro...

They have a grand opening sign on the building.

Has anyone tried the new So California Flower Market Cafe? It's at 765 S. Wall Street - in the historic Flower Market block. This used to be the Operetta Cafe. I believe the owner is an Orange County restauranteur; opted for a simplistic decor in green and white, too sparse for me, but a clean look. Food is light fare - sandwiches, omelettes, breakfast sandwiches, tacos, pastries, etc. Open only for breakfast and lunch (the Flower Markets close around 10 or 11 a.m., so no need to be open longer). Hey, buy flowers cheap and grab some good grub.

I don't have a dog in this fight, and I haven't yet been to the restaurant, but I just wanted to point out that Tony ``Sinosoul'' C. is about as serious and passionate as foodbloggers get, and has been for years. Questioning his tact or decorum may be legitimate; questioning either his bona fides or his intent are not. Believe me, if he had thought the Royale was one tenth as good as certain posters here seem to think it is, he would have been at least as dogged about broadcasting his pleasure as he has been about airing his disappointment.
