Big Wangs Sports Bar Coming to 8th and Grand

The former Tranquility Base at 8th and Grand will soon become the third location for sports bar Big Wangs.

Downtown sports fans will have a new place to watch the Lakers try to defend their NBA title in a few months, as Hollywood's has signed a deal to open its third location at 8th and Grand, in the space formerly occupied by Tranquility Base.

The sports bar's first location at Sunset and Cahuenga opened in early 2007, and a North Hollywood location opened more recently. Partner P.J. Brill said today he believes the bar's food sets it apart. "We take a lot of pride in our food quality," he said. The bar offers an extensive menu, and prepares all its food on-site.

Brill said that he's excited about the new space and the Downtown market. "We've always been interested in Downtown," he said.

Tranquility Base opened in April of 2008 on the ground floor of Sky Lofts, but closed for good in the first few days of 2009.

In a complex deal, Big Wangs negotiated a new lease with the building while also purchasing the Tranquility Base business. That should allow for a quick build-out. While nothing is ever simple when it comes to restaurant openings, the new spot could be open by the end of January.

Tyler Murphy of represented Big Wangs in the deal, and Matthew Fainchtein of represented the building.

Hooray for Big Wangs!

Finally a "real" sports bar comes to Downtown. Over the years I've heard Hooters was coming, I really wanted Yankee Doodles to come and even tried to put together a sports bar group at 5th and Main where Cafe Bermuda is and is struggling. ( Imagine a sports bar on the corner of 5th and Main during Art Walk!)

I have frequented Big Wangs' Hollywood location at Selma and Cahuenga many times and can reassure all sports fans that they know sports!

HD tv's run amuck on almost every inch of every wall with ALL the games that one could imagine. I've been there when baseball, auto racing and World Cup-qualifying soccer covered the screens. Not to mention the obvious NBA, NHL and NFL, which ever one's are in season. East coast games, west coast, international games- they show them all.

Plus the wings (or wang's) taste good and if you order the HOT ones, you better have the fire department on speed dial! And let me not forget the pool tables, pinball machines and the MUSIC! They've got this digital jukebox that play even album cuts on the most rarest of albums. ( You know that song that only YOU like and everyone else hates, Yeah they got that one too! And I betcha they do. And oh yeah, ( I heard) they have really great ( strong) drinks.

Also, what's great is that if for some ungodly reason they don't already have your game on when you walk in, ask and they will change the closest screen to accommodate you and your party.

Welcome to Downtown L.A., Big Wang's!!!!

Their food is awful and the service is subpar at best.
