Armed with a stun gun, an LAPD officer sprints into Maria's Italian Kitchen.
DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — More than a dozen police officers and firefighters crammed into a narrow stairway at Maria's Italian Kitchen this evening to break down an office door and remove a man who had barricaded himself inside the upstairs room.
Restaurant staff called for help around 9pm after a man ran through the eatery and up the stairs. Nearly 20 LAPD cars responded, as did air support and LAFD ladder trucks.
Flower street was quickly closed to traffic, but it was confusion on the sidewalk as puzzled pedestrians tried to understand what all the commotion was about. A handful of diners were still eating inside the restaurant throughout the incident.
It was nearly an hour before the door was broken down and a black male looking to be in his 30s and approximately 6'3" was removed. Officers used a stun gun to subdue the man before leading him outside to paramedics. He was transported to County USC hospital.
