Members of the California School Employees Association partipate in a protest against cuts in education funding.

A loud but peaceful crowd gathered in the Historic Core this afternoon to protest cuts in education funding. After assembling on Hill street between 4th and 5th, the group took a short march to the Ronald Reagan state office building on Spring street, where a rally was held.

The event was part of a state and national "Day of Action" aimed at fighting education cuts.

Perhaps 2,000 marchers took part in the Downtown event.

It was surprising to see a lot of teachers also. There were also a couple of groups that didn't belong to the education side but at least the were peaceful. At the Ronald Reagan building there seem to be more than 2000 though.

I also want to ad (I wrote the 1st comment also) that the UTLA drew a crowd too.

Maybe it's time to reconsider Prop. 13.

@Simon: No kidding... I had just started high school when Prop. 13 passed all those years ago, and have a very clear memory of what our schools were like before (great teachers, small classes, up-to-date books, ample supplies) and after (none of the above).

California used to have some of the best public education in the country... but not any more

The thing of it is that levels for single family residential property are evening out...so Grandma can pay 200 bucks a year for her house, when her next door neighbor pays 5K or 10K for house next door.

Nope, the dirty little secret about Prop 13, it was never meant to save Grandma's house...it was so commercial and rental property would never be taxed fairly.

Remember Howard Jarvis ran the LA Apartment Owner's association.

But to listen to Meg Whitman's ads you would think she thinks there is plenty of fat to cut from the state budget.

Right.

That ship sailed before Grey Davis was elected.

None of the potential governors will even touch prop 13, even talking about a repeal is unlikely. So for the next 4 years, CA will have to find other sources of revenue. It's the most logical solution, but will not happen in our generation.
