Nickel Diner's Bacon Donut Makes the News

Nickel Diner on CBS2 Eric Richardson []

CBS2's 6pm newscast featured the Nickel's bacon donut as its "6:15 Showcase."

For a little neighborhood eatery, the got quite the run of press going. First Monica and Kristen made it to LA Times' Column One and now tonight pastry chef Sharlena Fong's bacon donut .

The maple-glazed bacon donut is certainly the item most likely to induce a double-take, but those who've eaten Fong's creations will tell you that the Nickel has plenty of worthwhile pastry and dessert options.

Right now the Nickel's taking orders for Thanksgiving pies, offering options for pumpkin cheesecake, pumpkin pie, pecan pie and apple pie. Orders need to be in by Sunday.

Nice report, although they didn't say exactly where the place is located, only that it was in "downtown L.A."

I guess those bacon fans will hopping on Google to get the map.

Wow. A bacon donut actually sounds amazing to me. And I don't even like bacon that much. I was in Budapest recently and found that their traditional bread which is often eaten with cheese or bacon or chicken, is just like donut dough. So, without a doubt it's delicious. If you're readers want suggestions of other restaurants in LA, they'll find them here: http://www.travelcalifornia.com/Cities/losangel/losangel.htm

Well, seeing that image of bacon on doughnut, I couldn't help it. I can't remember when it was the last time that I had bacon, but it has been years. So I took off for the grocery store and got a pizza crust, cheese, tomatoe paste, mushrooms and a pound of Canadian bacon. That was Friday night.

WHOA! I woke up yesterday feeling like my blood had coagulated.

I'm on a diet now; no turkey dinner on Thursday. I'd best learn how to cook before the next time I get the notion.

Somehow this 'Fun with Food' pet photo contest entry featuring the bacon covered maples did not make the finalists:

Food of The Gods served daily at the Nickel Diner. Eat three of the bacon donuts and the blood won't reach your feet until tomorrow but you won't care. Yes, they are that good...

I'm currently addicted to their strawberry doughnuts. It's like crack for us "hoity toity" loft owners.

Monica and Kristen are angels on earth - or devils incarnate - depending on your cholesteral levels!

Maybe both?!?!

I don't mean to bash, I really like this place for breakfast. They have great options for vegetarians but I would like to make a recommendation. I went there last week with family that came down for Thanksgiving. The owner came over and brought dessert samples but failed to mention one of them was the bacon donut. We cut the samples in half and I tried one. Luckily as soon as I placed it in my mouth it tasted funny (the bacon). I quickly emptied it onto a napkin and rinsed my mouth out with water. I don't mind that much, I didn't chew or swallow but it seems like something important for them to advertise seeing how some people have an aversion to pork for religious, dietary or other belief reasons. --Just a friendly suggestion. Please say bacon-maple donut not just maple donut. :)
