Mac & Cheeza Preps for Art Walk Soft Opening

Downtown is no slouch when it comes to mac & cheese. Pete's Cafe has always been known for its offering, and more recently entries from the Nickel Diner and South Park's Corkbar have gotten praise.

Into that crowded field steps the new Mac & Cheeza, a new offering from the owners of Eagle Rock's Larkin's Joint. The eatery will be having a four-hour soft opening during Thursday evening's Art Walk.

You're not going to find any details , but the small space is located on the 8th street side of the Chapman Flats and will offer takeout and delivery only. The menu is -- as one might guess from the name -- focused on macaroni and cheese, and the tagline promises both "eats and sweets."

An email sent to the restaurant's mailing list yesterday afternoon says that Thursday's preview will run 7 - 11pm. It's cash only, so plan accordingly.

Larkin's might be the only edible restaurant in all of Eagle Rock. If this mac is as good as Larkin's mac, DTLA is in good hands.

Casey's catered an event at Seven Grand with jalapeno mac & cheese. It was hands-down the best I had ever had. They don't seem to have it on the menu in the restaurant though...

Can't wait to try out Mac & Cheeza!

SinoSoul: All of Eagle Rock? Really.

I'm excited for this opening - for sure I'll be there with fork in hand.

I'm excited about this place. Larkin's is one of my favorite restaurants. But to say it's the only edible place in Eagle Rock is completely wrong. Just off the top of my head...Auntie Em's, Casa Bianca, and The Oinkster are all great establishments in Eagle Rock.

My mother's baked mac-and-cheese (elbow macaroni, extra sharp cheddar, white onion) is pretty hard to top, but I'll try the new place soon and taste for myself

I went to the soft opening this past weekend and I'm sorry, it was some of the most mediocre mac n' cheese I've had over the years - and I tried both the vegetarian and meat versions. The actual mixture itself seemed to have zero flavor (the soy was the worst - beyond bland), and the pasta and cheese of low quality. Add-in options were fairly pedestrian, nothing wild and fun. The owner was really nice and the desserts yummy, but that's about it. I think this concept has some some great possibilities but so far a major disappointment!
