South Park's Liberty Grill is set to give way to a new location for El Cholo, a Los Angeles institution since its opening in 1927.
DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — Fans of venerable Mexican restaurant don't have much longer to wait before they can get their fix Downtown. The eatery will be doing hiring for its new South Park location next week and is targeting an opening in the first week of June, according to General Manager Joey Gonzalez.
The new location will be at 1037 S. Flower, just around the corner from Staples Center and L.A. Live. The building was home to Liberty Grill from 2006 to late 2009. That restaurant was a partnership between Bernadette Leiweke -- the wife of AEG CEO Tim Leiweke -- and Camacho's Inc., and the pair remain partners in the new incarnation.
El Cholo opened at 1121 S. Western in 1927 and has operated spin-off restaurants in various locations ever since. Along with the original location, the company currently operates eateries in Santa Monica, La Habra and Irvine.
