DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — At the end of a long agenda, the Metro Board today unanimously approved a pilot program extended the hours of the Red Line between Downtown and North Hollywood during the upcoming holiday season. The program, which would be privately funded, now must secure contractually binding funding commitments by October 17 in order for the service to move forward.
Board member and County Supervisor Gloria Molina amended the bill, clarifying that private commitments must be fully secured for the effort to move forward.
Bringing Back Broadway Executive Director Jessica Wethington Mclean spoke about the commitments that have already been made by business and property owners in Downtown and Hollywood. Cedd Moses of 213 (Golden Gopher, Broadway Bar, Seven Grand) spoke in support of the effort, and afterward talked about how branding and marketing will be important steps to make the concept a success.
The pilot would extend operation of the Red Line to 3am on Friday and Saturday nights during the holidays. The motion approved included a start date of November 1, but those familiar with the discussions have indicated the 14th as a more realistic launch. The extended service would run until January 3.

So needed! I hate not being able to hang out until the early morning hours in Downtown / Hollywood without watching the clock.
What about the Purple Line??
The Purple Line isn't part of this current effort.
Nice! Hopefully it will generate some talk about extending this kind of service beyond the holidays.
JM- indeed, indeed!
It is wonderful to think that L.A. is finally becoming a real transit town, with services available for a reasonable amount of the day.
I do hope L.A. votes with it's feet so we can have real transit service most of the time. Finally!
Extending the subway hours is certainly a good idea!
BUT...
(and this is a short response to Mr. trixiegal ): in order for LA to become a real mass transit city, much more needs to be done!
First, subway hours should be extended 7 days a week (not just 2 days a week); BTW - Sunday should also be extended.
But more importantly, having only One subway line (and a few rail lines "from nowhere to nowhere" ) just doesn't work for most people... We need a citywide network of subway lines, only then LA would start catching up to the rest of the world, and will become - as you eloquently put it "a real transit town".
Heck yass!
Alek, I would suggest to you that we will have a train network within three years when the Expo (Aqua) Line opens up. We'll have train lines radiating out from Downtown to almost all points of the compass.
From there, with the Downtown Connector, things will only get better, and within ten years, you'll be hearing people saying things like, "I had to get up to the Valley, but I wasn't sure if should take the T train over to Union Station and catch the R train there, or take the P train down Wilshire and then catch the L line up to Sherman Oaks through the Sepulveda Pass, so I checked on my cell and found out there was overcrowding on the R train, so I went for the P."
