After having been pushed through City Council, the effort to extend the hours of the Red Line subway over the holidays takes another step forward on Thursday when it comes before the Metro Board of Directors. Directors Bernard Parks and Antonio Villaraigosa made the motion, which would direct Metro CEO Roger Snoble to implement the pilot.

The Metro motion notes that "numerous private entities voiced their support for the pilot program and it appears that a majority of the necessary $85,500 has been identified." It places a deadline of October 17th for all funds to be committed.

As written, the motion indicates Friday / Saturday service between November 1, 2008, and January 3, 2009. Discussions have indicated that it's more likely service would not be implemented until November 14.

The Red line NEEDS to be 24 hours all the time!! I cannot understand why this is not already the case. The main reason that people do not ride the subway for nightlife activities is because it stops before bars and nightclubs close! THis is a serious problem in the LA subway system and it should be corrected IMMEDIATELY! -J

I don't know that we necessarily need 24-hour service just yet, but extending later into the evening really is important, especially as Downtown and Hollywood both grow. What's sad is that we used to have later service, but it was cut in 2005.

I so hope that we have the extension of hours. This is Los Angeles with millions of people and its crazy that we do no have round-the-clock subway service. I was stranded there at like 12:45PM one night, not knowing that I had missed the last subway and there wasn’t a sole around to or sign that told me I was SOL. I waited there an hour, then retreated upstairs and walked home 5 miles though bad areas near Western and Santa Monica way back to my home in the rain. I also did not see one bus on my walk home. PLEASE give people this option of waiting in a safe place and taking the Metro. It’s a must for my friends who use it when going to bars so that they don’t get DUI’s. The problem with it is bars close at 2am and that subway is not in service. Especially for all the people going to the Hollywood Blvd bars and clubs!! THANKS FOR DOING THIS!

METRO REDLINE NOW OPEN 24-HOURS!!!(?) Having a 24-Hour Metro Redline is vital to the success of Hollywood bars, clubs, after-hour clubs, restaurants and other Hollywood businesses. It would eliminate so much time & stress related to parking and driving in that highly congested area, let alone the gargantuan parking fees etc. I whole heartily recommend that this be approved and implemented ASAP!!  A huge thanks needs to go out to Directors Bernard Parks and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa who made this motion.
