The Mayor's Love of Big Scissors

Thursday: ribbon cutting for the Center for Community Health.

Standing outside the new Center for Community Health on Thursday morning, waiting for a ribbon cutting to take place, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa was in a playful mood.

"I like big scissors and I can not lie," Villaraigosa sang in his best Sir Mix-A-Lot voice.

The Mayor's had plenty of chances to exercise that affection around Downtown this week, participating in three ribbon cuttings over the past six days.

On Saturday, he used oversized gold scissors -- likely the pair Curbed L.A. says -- to cut the ribbon at the new Police Administration Building across from City Hall.

Monday evening, he joined Councilwoman Jan Perry and officials from AEG and Regal Cinemas to cut the tape at the new Regal Cinemas L.A. Live.

And finally, Thursday morning, a giant set of silver scissors were in the Mayor's hands for the ribbon cutting at the new Skid Row health clinic.

The Mayor's next chance to wield some oversized shears Downtown may have to wait until November 15, when the Gold Line Eastside Extension opens.

I've mentioned this about the Mayor and Jan Perry on numerous occasions - if you've got a big ribbon and gigantic scissors, they will be there to open anything.

Doesn't every politician, especially mayors and city councilpeople love big scissors?

I'll trade scaffolding and cranes for scissors any day. It's a good sign when these projects are completed and opened! Let's celebrate the hard work of many.

I don't think anybody denies that there are problems in this city and country, but that does not mean we can't take time to acknowledge when new things open or come online, especially in downtown, which needs investment.

I realize that both mayor V. and Jan Perry are media whores, which can be annoying. However there would be no talk about expanding mass transit in this city, particularly the subway(which is direly needed) if it wasn't for the current mayor and the help of Tom LaBonge. Whatever other misgivings I have about the man, I do appreciate what he has tried to do for transportation in this city.

If he manages to accelerate construction on any of the proposed rail projects, he can cut and many ribbons and kiss as many babies as he wants IMO.
