A customer surveys donuts available at BabyCakes' new Downtown bakery. The eatery offers items for those with particular diets, including gluten free offerings.

It’s here. Two years after it first announced L.A. plans and nine months after a lease was signed, NYC-based BabyCakes on Sunday morning opened the doors at its new 6th and Los Angeles bakery.

The company announced the opening on Saturday via Twitter, and 24 hours later salivating fans were waiting outside, ready to order their refined sugar free, gluten free, almost guilt free brownies, cupcakes and donuts.

Up from Manhattan Beach, Ellen Walters brought 10-year-old Owen Foster to take home a few pastries. “We just went to Babycakes (in NY) over the holiday,” said Walters. “We took a cab straight to there and thought we had enough for the cab ride, and for later. We ate all of them on the way to the hotel and had to go back the next day.”

It’s that kind of dedicated obsessiveness that explained why the Sunday morning line was so heavy on those from outside Downtown. A quick survey found cupcake fans from Culver City, Pasadena and Ventura County among those waiting.

BabyCakes originally planned to open a more traditional location further west, targeting a site on Beverly near the Grove. When it announced its Downtown intentions, it had to defend itself against commenters who said the neighborhood was too dangerous and too hard to park in.

Those concerns didn't seem to matter to the folks in line on Sunday. They weren't even fussy about what was running out inside. Susan Fewy from San Dimas arrived later in the morning and the line was still out the door. "Everyone knows what they want, so the line is going fast. We're just glad they are here," she said.

Wow. I first came to L.A. via Greyhound, and Babycakes is now right around the corner from that old Greyhound terminal. The neighborhood is changing in ways that were unimaginable back then. I only wish Greyhound had held on to that site, instead of moving to 7th and Alameda. I would have to board a bus just to come to L.A. all over again -- but this time, be greeted by Babycakes. Wow.

$4 for a cupcake is out of my league although they weren't bad.

Like most things, if you can't afford it, don't buy it.

If you knew the price of the quality ingredients they put in Babycakes you would understand the price. I am sure the markup in China Town cupcakes is equivalent to Babycakes.

I bought the overpriced vanilla, chocolate and red-velvet cupcakes, the crumbcake, chocolate chip cookies and cookie sandwich last week. It's meh. The cupcakes are kinda dry and has slight bitter taste to them. The crumbcake also has a slight bitter taste to them. The frostings and the cream in the sandwich has a slight bitter taste to them as well. Might this be from the agave sweetener? It's really overpriced for they are. Mani's on Fairfax is SOOO MUCH better!!

I have recently become seriously addicted to these cupcakes. They have the most delicious frosting I've ever tasted that nicely compliments the not too sweet cake. Has anyone started a support group for this place yet? I need to join!
