Beer and Wine Signed for P.E. Lofts' Nightlife Row

This space in the P.E. Lofts was originally slated for BabyCakes, but will now contain a new beer and wine bar by the owners of Bacaro LA.

The ink is barely dry on a deal to bring a new beer and wine bar to the growing nightlife stretch on 6th street between Main and Los Angeles. The owners of the USC-adjacent are signed to open in a roughly 800 square foot space in the Pacific Electric building, next to Blu LA Cafe.

Attentive readers may notice that location as the same one announced a few months back as the home of BabyCakes NYC. No need to panic -- BabyCakes found that they needed a slightly more flexible space and have moved one door down 6th street.

Bacaro LA is located at 23rd and Union, in the North University Park area. The Pacific Electric building was represented by Tyler Murphy of the , while Bacaro was represented by Nima Bararsani of .

Three bars at our building now! Hooray!

I'm not sure it sends the right message to have so many businesses that serve alcohol so close to Skid Row. On the other hand, it's better to have street-level retail space activated than remain vacant.

I AM sure that I would not want to rent the loft right above a bar!

I've heard good things about Bacaro and wish them luck. I am starting to wonder how many nightlife venues (bars and clubs) are going to be allowed in the area though. I'm not talking about proximity to Skid Row - I'm talking about numbers. It's been getting pretty crazy on Friday and Saturday nights, with the numbers of bars we've already got.

Add to that this new bar, the Santa Fe bar, a potential 1,500-capacity club at Versus, and another potential liquor license at the Cecil (Nip/Tuck).

Does anyone know if Club 740 got its license revoked?

So I'm just putting the question out there: When has the Historic Core reached saturation point?

Keep those bars opening!

Whatever it takes to help reverse the downtown ghost town of our sidewalks.

We could use 20 more bars and clubs, easily.

We have the 8th and Hill nightclub coming soon...they painted that ugly building on the corner...happy to see the area around Colori Kitchen getting cleaned up!

a bar row? This could be a good thing or a bad thing depending how it is managed. Thou currently the few venues have been working out well. I think everyone who walks on main st, los angeles or 6th st feels safer when they see other people walking and parking their cars in the area late at night. But many too many venues may attract too many people and become a nuisance to the residents. hope for the best.

Any street life / nightlife is better than creepy silent streets hosting the walking dead.

I love the Nightlife ... on June 18, 2009, at 06:26AM – #8

I live at 5th and Main and would gladly see more bar patrons than the ones who currently roam the streets at all hours. The noise level is irrelevent; any human presence creates noise, and we certainly have that already; along with constant sirens, buses, garbage trucks, construction, and production crews.

I always keep a plentiful stash of 33d ear plugs.

I'd personally like to see more retail... but do agree that more businesses, even if they are bars, are a positive thing. And further- completely agree with "I love the Nightlife" with respect to noise... Downtown residents that feel the need to complain about noise in the URBAN area you moved to, should just move.

Scoot over "Drink up". I'd love to share a barstool with you, you're my peoples. By chance, are you related to Bukowski?

Rich,

I live at NCT which is by 740. The club seems to still be open, but the crowds are much smaller these days. I agree anything is better than empty retail spaces. I wish we could get more down here by NCT, Republic, and Chapman. I guess gentrification moves slow. BTW I lived on the second floor right above Blue LA, and Association during construction. It was not that bad.

Dude, I live two floors above those spaces, actually directly above Cole's, and you don't hear a PEEP. Those floors are like one foot thick concrete and steel girders. Plus there's a giant parking garage (30 foot ceilings...actually partially two levels of parking) between the lofts and the bars, which are technically in the "basement" even though they have street frontage. My point is: you're not going to hear noise from down there, short of a truck crashing into the place.

By the way, I thought that cupcake place was moving into that space? What happened to the cupcakes?

Alexandra Leh on June 21, 2009, at 10:24AM – #13

scott, i've been a PE resident since it opened in 2005...i live on the 3rd floor over the association. ever since they opened, and cole's reopened, the noise level (other than the expected traffic) has shifted from the occasional screaming from an insane homeless human passing by to large groups of drunken revelers who keep it up until after 2am. so, while it's true we don't hear noise from inside, we definitely hear it from the street. i don't drink, but i don't at all mind if anyone else does. just don't drive -- and don't f-ing wake me up. those of us who are affected by the noise (and there are plenty of us here) have asked that signage be posted (as it is at all the other bars around downtown) to be respectful of the neighbors, with an enforcement by the management and security guards. hasn't happened, yet...but, it'll have to, especially with this new place opening up.

It is my understanding from Alex Moradi, PE Lofts owner, that the cupcake place is still happening. There are 2 storefronts and they traded spots.

Scott and Russell: The BabyCakes move is addressed in the story. They just needed a slightly larger space, so they moved one down.

I'm all for more bars, I'm just glad I don't face 6th Street! I feel bad for those that do, especially if they have to in bed before 2am on Friday and Saturday.

That being said, I'm moving out of Downtown. Ok not really, but I am moving out of the Historic Core to Little Tokyo! We're excited!
