Streetcar Ads Hit the Streets

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — A new ad campaign highlighting the connections that would be created by the L.A. Streetcar project made its appearance in and around Downtown this week. Designed to raise general awareness of the effort, the ads are posted on space donated by CBS Decaux.
The branding campaign, built around the tagline "see what happens when Downtown connects," pairs activities across Downtown, such as a game at Staples Center and nightlife in the Historic Core.
One billboard at Olympic and Broadway is included in the campaign, which otherwise utilizes CBS Decaux's street furniture spots on bus benches and kiosks.
The $100-million streetcar project is currently beginning its environmental documents, and this Spring applied for a $25-million "urban circulator" grant from the Federal Transit Authority.
Project backers including Councilman Jose Huizar, who leads the Bringing Back Broadway effort, hope to see the streetcar operational by 2014. While a final route has not been set, the first line is designed to connect the Convention Center to Bunker Hill by way of the Broadway corridor.

Maybe Councilman Huizar should also concern himself with the blantant business and noise violations from the merchants along Broadway.

Community support and excitement to my mind is the key advantage the streetcar proposal has. This is a very smart way to build that.

The LASI website has photos of streetcars in the Pacific Northwest. Not surprisingly, the streetcars there are fully enclosed. Give our great weather, any chance we'd get open-air streetcars?

Every city of any size (and some of not much)wants to start a streetcar these days. The difference with Downtown LA is that there are actually large numbers of people living and working there who need to move around. There are also some nice wide streets where the narrowing effect of a streetcar would be beneficial. I don't know how much of a priority this is versus getting rail to Santa Monica or Ontario Airport or some higher capacity transit through the Sepulveda Pass (405), but it seems like a Downtown LA streetcar could actually work.
