City Council today approved $1 million in funding for the that would be applied to preliminary engineering and the project's final environmental documents.

After a morning in which the item was first continued to March 18 and then put back on the agenda, Council passed the funding without discussion as part of $8.7 million in Measure R Local Return funds.

Last Friday, Councilman Jose Huizar's motion to reprogram $1 million toward the streetcar generated some intense debate in Council chambers. The item was continued one week so that Transportation committee chair Bill Rosendahl could be present for a vote.

According to a release put out this afternoon by Huizar's office, the new funding and existing allocations by the Community Redevelopment Agency are enough to take the streetcar through its environmental and engineering phases.

The project is estimated to cost $125 million. A recently-released economic study said that the project would generate $1.1 billion in new development and 2,100 permanent jobs.

This is great news. Now it needs to be done right. LA is not Portland and our streetcar does not need t be a copy of theirs. They have shorter blocks and more equal retail, restaurants and street traffic than we do. Our street car needs to be on Broadway in both directions, it needs to serve the new South Park, Convention Center, Staples Center directly on the South and the Music Center, Disney Hall and the new Grand Ave development on the North without any long walks of over a few hundred feet or so. There should be as few turns as possible as a starter. Couplets (or a single track on two different streets) are OK as long as Broadway has two tracks and is bi-direction. Also where will the cars be stored when not in use along with a service area for the cars?

Let’s get this going so that Broadway and our cities attractions can all be connected and we can easily get around downtown without having to drive and park more than once.
